Class 4 Spring Term 2015
Handel's Water Music
We listened to Handel's Water Music and explored how our voices can be combined with instruments. We used this technique to create compositions of our own.
Solar Eclipse Friday 20th March 2015
We were very excited about the Solar Eclipse on Friday 20th March. Some of us had made our own viewers and we had a great selection of colanders!
We found out how and why solar eclipses happen and went outside to view the event. We were surprised by how much colder the temperature became, but a little disappointed with the level of darkness we experienced.

Kwick Cricket - Thursday 26th March
On Thursday 26th March, year 5 & 6 went to Wrekin College for their first Kwik Cricket tournament. After all the practise they had put in at lunchtimes over the last couple of weeks they turned up full of confidence. This was until Mr McGrath received a copy of the rules which were extremely different from ones we had been practising! This wouldn't stop them though and within an hour the team had won 3 games out of 3 and won their group. They were then grouped with the other top teams and continued where they left off, winning their first game. Following this, a very narrow loss to the eventual winners and second placed team meant St Lucia's finished 3rd overall. This didn't dampen any spirits and the team returned feeling very happy and proud! Mr McGrath would like to thank all the year 5's and 6's who came to cricket every lunchtime and also the team for being such a pleasure to watch on the day. I'm already looking forward to the next tournament!
Class 4's Residential Visit
On Tuesday 24th February Class 4 set off to Electric Mountain. We travelled deep inside Mynydd Gwefru to see how electricity can be generated using the power of water. We especially liked the fashionable hairnets and red helmets! Unfortunately we were not able to take photographs inside the mountain, but it was certainly a memorable experience.
After tucking into a well deserved lunch, Class 4 then had a DT Workshop using Lego Technic. Their teamwork was great, and every group produced a moving model (at least for a few seconds, and some with help from gravity!)
Our evening at the Youth Hostel began with a walk up a small hill! Beds were made and clothes unpacked. The evening meal was delicious, finished by a choc ice, fresh fruit or a small slither of ginger sponge and custard. Games were played, teddies were introduced and judged, and after hot chocolate and biscuits, it was bedtime.
Some early starters were busy trying to pack and organise their rooms at 6 am!! However, by 8 o’clock every bed was stripped, bag packed, and the first course of breakfast had begun!
The walk down to the bus was much easier than the climb up had been! Our journey to C. A. T. was a little fraught – those twisty Welsh roads really do need straightening! When we arrived it was great to let off steam before lunch. The Journey of Water gave us a great deal to think about, before we explored the ‘hands on’ activities.
Class 4 arrived back at St. Lucia’s for 6 pm. I’m not sure whether it was the children or adults who were in bed earliest on Wednesday evening or more tired on Thursday! A big ‘well done’ Class 4!

Greek Orthodox Church
On Monday 2nd February Class 3 and 4 visited the Greek Orthodox Church in Shrewsbury. We were greeted by Father Stephen and his helpers.
We had an extremely interesting visit and we were able to explore the similarities and differences between the Greek Orthodox Church and St Lucia's Church in Upton Magna.

Back to School After Christmas!
We often make resolutions at the start of a New Year. Class 4 have found out about a Jewish celebration
at this time and thought about their personal targets.

Class 4 have been using Fiction Express book from the Shropshire Library Service. From the front cover,
we wrote the opening of the first chapter. Here is one example using direct speech and a variety of
punctuation.

We have been looking at the Water Cycle as part of our work this term on 'Water In Our Life'. Using
their own research notes, the children created information posters.
