Hi class 1
Last week we looked at the continent of Africa and in particular learnt about the different types of wild animals that live there. We made animal masks and gave our animals names beginning with the initial letter. This week the continent we will be investigating will be Asia. We will be finding out about the styles of art from the countries here.
The Olympic sports we will be looking at will be those that use a bike, what sports can you discover?
In maths we will be counting in 5's and in phonics we will be recapping capital letters and the names of the letters.
Look forward to seeing you on Wednesday!

This week we went on a search for bug homes. We found slugs and worms under logs, centipedes and beetles under stones, spiders under bark and hover flies and flies on leaves. We then made some more types of homes to go into forest school. Mrs Cresswell had a good idea for making a bee hotel to bring more bees into the area.
First we had to hollow out the bamboo so the bees will have so where to crawl into.
Next packed them together into an old plastic bottle.
Next we looked for a good place to put the hotel. It needed to be in a dry, sunny spot and over a meter high. We looked around and found a suitable place in a tree. We then had to secure it to a branch.
Let's hope we get lots of visitors to the bee hotel!

Good morning class 1.
Did you find out how many countries there are in South America? We found 12. We then looked on the internet for traditional stories from some of these countries. Our favourite one was about a rainbow and a parrot. The more helpful the parrot was the more colours he got on his feathers until he had all the colours of the rainbow. Could you be a rainbow like the parrot?
This week we will be learning about the continent of Africa.
In maths we will be finding cuboids. We didn't find many cubes so we used the clixi to make some! Good luck 👍
In our Olympic sports we will be trying some gymnastics. We had lots of fun with the track and field events last week. We discovered that we are better at some sports than others, but the more we practiced, the better we got. Remember, never give up, keep on trying!
In phonics we will be finding more words that are made up of two different words e.g lap and top becomes laptop. Keep practicing the tricky words, don't forget the 'e' on some and come!
Keep reading and using numbots.
Looking forward to seeing more of you back on Wednesday, but if you can't be in school let me know if you want any more books or work.
Keep singing and dancing 😀

This week in class 1 we have been problem solving and investigating.
In our outside area we found lots of old pipes, many different sized containers and lots of soapy bubbles and water, but what could we make with it all?
First we had to find a way to connect the different types of pipe...
Then we thought of ways we could get the water out of the trays and down the pipes....
After lots of experimenting we finally found all the leaks and stopped them, and we found a way to catch the water at the end of the pipes so we could reuse it.....we decided it was a water park!
We were also lucky enough to dodge the thunder and lightening and get down to Forest School. We were investigating the many different types of trees we have growing there. We used leaf identification cards to name the trees. This one was a willow tree.

Hi class 1, well what a wet week we has last week, hope it starts to warm up soon!
This week in class 1 we will be learning about the 3D shape called a cube. How many will you find this week, will they be good containers for food to?
Last week we found that the continent of North America only had 4 countries, Greenland, Canada, United States and Mexico. We found out lots of interesting information on the internet, we even listened to the different types of music from those countries. Some was slow and quite sad and others were very happy, fast songs.
The continent we are researching this week is South America. Will it have more or less countries than North America? What different types of music will they have?
How did you get on with the running races? What distances did you complete?
This week we will be looking at the sports that involve throwing a piece of equipment such as a javelin, shotput, hammer etc and sports that involve jumping e.g long jump or high jump. These are called 'field' events. I think you will need a lot of space for these sports so might need to go in the garden or maybe the park. You'll probably have to ask an adult with a tape measure to help you again, thanks mum and dad! See how far you can throw an item or how far you can hop, skip and jump!
In phonics find out how many words you can think of starting with 'fl' and 'sl. Keep going with writing sentences, you're doing really well.
Keep reading as well, let me know if you need any more books if you're not able to come into school at the moment.
Keep up with the singing and dancing.
Take care.

First I would like to say thank you for sharing the work you have been doing at home with me. I have been very impressed with how busy you have been and all the different activities you have completed, well done class 1👍😀. Also thank you to all the parents for your ongoing support during this difficult time.
In school this week we have been finding cylinders, there were a lot! We found out that cylinders are particularly good containers for foods and liquids.

Good morning class 1.
It was lovely to be working back in school with some of you last week. I'm looking forward to seeing you again this week, hopefully we'll be able to go to forest school on Friday.
How did you get on finding spheres last week? It was quite tricky, this is what I found.....
Did you find out what the 7 continents were....
North America
South America
Africa
Asia
Australasia
Antarctica
And the one we were learning about last week Europe. Which country did you choose? I found out about Spain - the capital city is Madrid, The Olympics were held here in 1992. There are many beaches but also mountains called the Pyrenees. They grow lots of fruits and vegetables as the weather is warm most of the year. One particular fruit they grow real well are grapes which they turn into a drink called wine. Spain also has two very good football teams, Real Madrid and Barcelona. There was a lot more I learnt and now I really want to go and visit!
This week can you find out about North America, do you think there will be as many countries in this continent as there was in Europe, there are 44 different countries in Europe !
The Olympic sport I had a go at on my kitchen table was ....table tennis! What did you try and did you win?
This week we will be learning about the 3D shape called a cylinder, do you think you'll find more of these than the spheres?
The Olympic sports we will be focusing on will those that involve running. These are called 'track events' and include the100 metre sprint, 400 metre hurdles, marathon, 4 x 100 metre relay...can you think of any more. Have a go at measuring out a certain distance in your garden or around your house. It can be a long or short distance, you might need a grown up with a tape measure to help you with this and then have a go!
Did you find out what the other 2 Olympics are? Well there are the Paralympics which usually happen straight after the Summer Olympics. These Olympics are for people with impairments and stands for parallel, meaning ' equal to', they happen side by side. The third Olympics is the Winter Olympics , these are my favourite and include all the sports that involve snow and ice, they're very exciting. They take place in the winter usually 2 years after the Summer Olympics. Can you think of some different sports that might take place? As with the Summer Paralympics, the Winter Paralympics take place at the same time as well.
In phonics can you find words starting with dr.....and br..... Then chose a word from each and include them in a sentence. Don't forget there are lots of fun activities on www.phonicsplay.com as well. Keep going with practising the tricky words and reading your books.
How's numbots going? Are you beating your score?
Keep in touch if you're not able to come back to school quite yet. Send in a picture or a piece of work you'd like me to see.
Keep singing and dancing.

Hope you are well and looking forward to the new topic!
We will be learning about the summer Olympics and the many different sports that take place. There are 2 other Olympics as well that take place at different times of the year, can you find out what they are and when they take place as your challenge this week.
The summer Olympics have categories of sports including sports that involve water, sports that use a ball, sports that involve throwing an object..... Can you think of any more types of competitive sports, there's more than you think! This week we are looking at sports that use a ball..... football, volleyball, hockey etc, choose one that you enjoy and try and set up a game with your family members! In maths we will be learning about 3D shapes and balls are.....spheres, so hunt around your home to find as many spheres as you can. Planet earth is also a sphere and there are many countries all around it. There are different names given to the 7 different land masses on planet earth, theses are called continents. Great Britain is part of the European continent, can you find out what the other 6 are? Europe will be the first continent we will study, so choose a country you are interested in and complete an information poster about that place. You might include the capital city, foods, plants and wildlife etc don't forget to include lots of pictures or photos. Have fun!
In phonics we are looking at the start of words with 2 constants ... Start with theses 2 ....st and sp....think of as many words as you can that start with theses two letters. Then take one word from each and include them in a sentence.
Keep up with the reading, if you need more books let me know.
Keep going with num bots....don't forget to keep singing and dancing!!
I'm looking forward to welcoming some of you back to school on Thursday, look out for the video!
Take care and stay safe.

Good morning class 1.
I hope you have enjoyed the lovely holiday sunshine and had a lot of fun. Thank you for the pictures, photos and work you have sent to school for me, it was really nice to see what you have been doing.
It's the first day of summer today so our topic just for this week is the season of summer. How do you know it's summer? There's lots of clues around! After you have thought about what summertime looks like why don't you have a go at making a large collage of a summer scene. Get your brothers, sisters, mums or dads to help find and stick on as many different types of paper and materials as you can find, don't forget you can use things you find outside as well as inside.
For English this week see if you can find some poems about summer to read and have a go at putting actions to the words. Then start to write your own poem, it doesn't have to be very long, just express your ideas about what you have seen and feel about this season.
In maths we will be thinking about capacity. If you've got a large container you can fill up with water or sand, collect different sized and shaped containers to find out which one holds the most and least.
Keep going with num bots on TT Rockstars and think a out which digraphs or trigraphs you might need to practice a bit more, some of them like to trick you out!!
I'll be doing another video for you later today to give you the answers to the questions I left you with last time and telling you about the topic we'll be doing starting from next week..... A clue is.....this event would have been taking place in July in Japan if we didn't have the covid 19 bug around!!!
Keep dancing and singing.

Hi class 1,
Hope you have had a good week. Has your bean seed started to grow yet? I look forward to reading and seeing your stories, send them into school for me if you would like to, it would be nice to get some letters from you all.
This will be the last week on our plant topic, it's half term holidays next week! I know I've learnt a lot about plants and how they grow, have you? Look out for the next video clip on Monday, I've got one last investigation for you and I'll give you the answer from last weeks question...' How did that plant get there?'
We're still on phase 4 phonics, if you need reading books over the holiday, let me know. Don't forget to return the ones you have already read please.
How did your maths challenge go? Set yourself another set of questions this week and see how much better you get.
We will be starting a new topic for the last term and look forward to sharing that with you soon.
Keep singing and dancing,
Take care

Good morning class 1.
Well it's a bit chilly outside today, a real change from the hot weather at the weekend.
Did you manage to plant some seeds last week? I planted the mango seed in some soil but nothing has grown yet. Do you think I should put some water on it? I also found some pea seeds in my shed so I'll try those this week, do you think they need to be in the sunshine or in the shade?
I hope you are enjoying the videos I've been putting on the website and having a go at answering the questions. This week the big mystery that needs answering is ... Why do some plants grow anywhere, and how did they get there?
Keep up with your phase 4 phonics and the numbots on TT Rock Stars.
Think about your adding and subtraction challenge as well - 20 questions, that stay the same all week, that you repeat each day to see how much better you get e.g 9-4=. 8+7=.
Keep reading! I'll be in school on Thursday to change reading books for you, so make sure you bring the ones you have read back so I can pass them onto somebody else.
Lastly look out for a letter arriving for you in the post!
Keep singing and dancing,

Well we're in the month of May now, the last month of spring. What season comes next?
Hope the sunny weather comes back this week, we might need it to make our seeds and plants grow!
Did you have a go at answering the fruit and vegetable questions?
Here are the answers....
1. Red pepper
2. Avocado
3. Mango
4. Melon
5. Butternut squash
My favourite was .... Mango, really sweet and juicy. There was just one seed in this fruit. It was large and very hard. I'm wondering if it will grow in this country as I've never seen a mango tree here, I'll plant it and see. It was interesting that some of the fruit and vegetables only had one large stone and others had lots of small ones. I wonder why, maybe it's something you could find out using a computer, remember if we don't know something, we can 'Google' it.
Keep going on TT Rockstars and doing daily phonics.
Have you found any seeds to plant this week. I'm going to attempt to make a video to send to you to show you my allotment. This is where I grow fruit and vegetables and have been planting lots of seeds. Don't forget to start your seed diaries if you can, I'll keep you updated on my mango! That reminds me of a story called 'Handa's Surprise'. Have you read it? There's lots of different types of fruit in it.
Keep reading, dancing and singing,

Well, what a week! Hope the sun comes back soon.
I've been trying some different fruits and vegetables this week and looking for the seeds.
Can you name them?
Well, what a week! Hope the sun comes back soon.
I've been trying some different fruits and vegetables this week and looking for the seeds.
Can you name them?
This tasted quite sweet and was crunchy when I bit into it. It's got lots of little seeds inside at the top of the vegetable.
This has a thick, wrinkly, green skin and is soft on the inside. It has a large seed in the centre.
When I cut into this fruit I hit a large, solid seed in the middle! It was very sweet and juicy, mmmm.
This fruit is the same shape as a rugby ball! I found lots of little seeds on the centre.
This vegetable was another unusual shape. The outside skin was very tough and I had to cook the inside before I could eat it. I found the seeds in the bottom half of the vegetable.
One thing I noticed about all these fruits and vegetables was the amazing colours inside when I cut them in half.
What did you notice?
Did you have a favourite taste?
Was there something you weren't so keen on?
I'll put the answers on the website next week.
Stay safe.

JOHN LEWIS & WAITROSE LAUNCH SOFT TOY DESIGN COMPETITION TO RAISE MONEY FOR THE NHS
THURSDAY 23 APRIL 2020
With homeschooling recommencing across the nation, the retailer is inviting children (and adults) to create and share their designs for a “super-bear” cuddly toy that celebrates the spirit and fortitude of the fearless men and women working on the frontline during the Covid-19 crisis.
The winning design will be turned into an exclusive Christmas toy and sold by Waitrose and John Lewis from October, following in the footsteps of a number of beloved characters from the retailer.
Martin George, Marketing Director for the John Lewis Partnership, comments: “The acts of gratitude demonstrated by the public towards frontline workers, from the thousands of “thank you” pictures to Thursday evening clapping, shows how deep our nation’s love for the NHS goes. We’ve already been supporting the NHS and critical workers in a number of ways, but we want to make a lasting contribution that demonstrates our appreciation for those who are on the front line.
“We hope this competition will help inspire the nation’s children to put pencil to paper and encourage many to submit their creations, while helping us give something back to our wonderful National Health Service and frontline workers.”
The competition, which launches on April 24, marks the start of the “Feel Good Friday” campaign, designed to bring the nation together in a time of isolation.
Every Friday, Waitrose & John Lewis will focus on one skill or pastime, all in service of helping people enjoy a shared interest, learn something new and creating stronger relationships within local communities.
Working with Partners, celebrity experts, a range of charities and the NHS, this will include everything from gardening, arts and crafts, mindfulness, to baking and fitness.
This follows a number of initiatives already launched by the John Lewis Partnership to support critical emergency workers during this time, from setting aside a proportion of hard-to-find and everyday essential items during periods of low stock and opening dedicated tills, to installing a wellbeing area for medical staff and volunteers at the Nightingale NHS Hospital in London.

JOHN LEWIS & WAITROSE LAUNCH SOFT TOY DESIGN COMPETITION TO RAISE MONEY FOR THE NHS
THURSDAY 23 APRIL 2020
- Children of Britain invited to share their designs to create a “super-bear”’ cuddly toy using #DesignYourSuperBear to be sold at Christmas - with 100% of the profits going to the NHS
- This marks the start of The Partnership’s “Feel Good Friday” campaign, designed to bring the nation together in a time of isolation

I'll give you a clue next to each photo...
This tree has beautiful blossom. When it falls off what fruit will grow?
This grows everywhere, even when you don't want it to!
These plants have grown from seeds and I will be planting them in my allotment where they will need lots of space and water to grow. It's a vegetable plant.
These are vegetable plants to. They grow very tall and have long thin .........
These flowers grow in the springtime and have lots of little bell shaped flowers.
This plant grows very fast and pandas love to eat it.
This tree has lots of red berries on and it reminds me of Christmas.
Hello Class 1,
Hope you had a lovely Easter and been able to enjoy the sunny weather.
For the next few weeks keep using the daily timetable you took home in your learning packs or the daily timetables on Twinkl.
PHONICS - you can use floppy phonics, www.phonicsplay.co.uk or www.twinkl.co.uk for many activities and there is week by week planning in the teachers section on phonics play if you want to use that.
Week 1 - 'er' digraph and revise all other letters, sounds and tricky words you are not sure about, remember, they like to trick you out!
Week 2, 3,4,5,6 - we would be starting phase 4 this week - check out the daily planning on twinkle and look in the teacher's section, there's 5 weeks of progressive planning there.
NB phase 4 uses the letters and sounds learnt to use in longer words and 2 syllable words as well as high frequency words and new tricky words. There is a big focus on spelling in this phase so plenty of chance to practice writing letters in the correct formation.
MATHS - keep going with TT rock stars, you are doing well👍 and keep practicing counting and number formation.
Week 1, 2 and 3 - the focus for maths would be on doubling, halving and sharing. There are many ideas and challenges on the twinkle website, keep it practical and remember maths is fun outside as well as inside!
Week 4 and 5 - the focus would be on money , again, lots on different websites but why not set up a shop, or a cafe... Lots of adding and subtracting can be included in this.
Week 6 - a focus on quick calculations e.g lots of adding and subtracting using two single digit numbers. Why not set up 20 questions to do in 10 minutes and see how many you get correct at the start of the week and have another go each day. See how much you will improve!
Topic
Our topic this half term is plants and plant growth. There are many activities on the Twinkle website to have a go at but why don't you also visit the RHS website. It will take you on virtual tours of many gardens and give you lots of information about the many different plants and trees we have. Why don't you start this week by finding out how many different plants and trees you have in your garden? Can you find where the seeds would be in those plants and collect some if you can. Don't forget to do some observational drawings or paintings of what you find, you could put them in your windows with your rainbows to cheer up any passers by.
Next week you could look at the different fruits and vegetables you have in your fridge. Where will you find the seeds in these foods? Again try and collect some of these seeds. Try tasting some fruits and vegetables you might not have tried before, you might like them😀.
Are there any seeds that you can eat? Always check with a grown up first.
The next few weeks you could think about what makes the seeds grow. Hopefully you will have found a few over the last couple of weeks and now is the time to see if any of them will grow! How about doing an experiment. Plant some seeds in different places, with or without water, in hot or cold places, light to dark places. Observe them over the next weeks and keep a diary of where you planted them, what you planted them in e.g soil, sand, play dough, whatever you have got and record when they start to break through and start growing and what they grow into or if they don't grow at all why not? This is a good chance to write information labels and captions with some diagrams.
Also why not read Jack and the Beanstalk. If you had a magic bean what would you want it to grow into, where might it take you? ....start writing your own story over a few days and don't forget to add illustrations!
Keep doing lots of reading, PE, singing, dancing and laughing.
Hopefully there are lots of ides to interest you and we will see each other soon.
Be kind and stay safe
