World War II Day 2018
To complete our topic work, key stage 2 enjoyed a fantastic World War II themed day.
We had land girls, evacuees and members of the armed forces. Thanks so much to the children and their parents for such a huge effort with a wonderful selection of costumes.

Following a 'ration book' recipe, the children cooked carrot buns. Carrots were a home-grown and plentiful vegetable during the war. Families 'grew their own' and used the sweetness and moisture of grated carrots to eke out their rations. Whilst cooking, there was a delicious aroma from the buns. The taste-testing during the afternoon left only a few crumbs, so if a little dry, they were certainly quite tasty.
Many thanks to Mrs Alexander and Mrs Pye for cooking our themed lunch. Toad in the Hole was popular with many of the children. Welsh rarebit and beef stew with dumplings were also on the main course menu. For dessert, there was rice pudding and Victory Sponge, together with fruit which could be picked or home-grown.
Thanks also to the ladies from the community who joined us for lunch, and Mrs Rickards who gave a fascinating talk to key stage 2 about growing up during wartime. We were all so grateful that you 'opened the cupboard' and shared some of your special memories with us all. As some of the children had brought in genuine artefacts, a 'pop-up' museum was opened in the school hall in the afternoon.
In addition, all the children took part in a competition for the best Anderson Shelter and garden.
What an amazing range of models, all created within the day, were on show. Although Mrs Rickards selected a top three from each class, all the models showed great effort and attention to detail.
